Get Ready for Oktoberfest 2022!

Most Norfolkan’s are aware of how our town got its name. German settlers came to this area and settled
near the confluence of the Elkhorn and the North Fork rivers, resulting in them choosing “North Fork” as
the name of the town. The name was submitted, and clearly the folks back east assumed that we just
couldn’t spell out here and changed the name to “Norfolk” and the rest is history.

Today, Norfolk still carries a lot of that German heritage. We still are supported by a mostly agricultural
economy, a lot of our food has a German background, and, of course, we like our beer! Given these
factors, it seems only natural that we would carry on one of the greatest German traditions of all,
Oktoberfest!! Oktoberfest originally began in Munich in 1811 as a fall celebration, and that festival still
carries on today.

Norfolk Oktoberfest Family Festival – September 23-24, 2022

Norfolk’s Oktoberfest festival will be taking place on September 23rd and 24th and includes many of the
same features as the original. Live music will feature a few different polka bands during the day,
followed up at night by music from the Rude Band on Friday, and Boundless on Saturday. This is a family
festival, so there will be bounce houses for the kids. There will also be a big wheel race, and new this
year will be a VR truck. Of course, we can’t have a celebration without corn hole, and that tournament
will be back this year.

There will also be a bucket pong tournament, and a stein holding competition
that is always a good time! Authentic German food will be available from several venders within the
festival. Oh yeah, did I mention there would be beer? Divots brewery is making a special Oktoberfest
brew to go along with several other options that will be available at any of the 3 bars. There will also be
a big screen TV that will be showing the Husker volleyball matches on both Friday and Saturday. This
festival also runs in conjunction with the annual Norfolk Lions Club Parade on Saturday morning, and the fall market, which features sales all through downtown.

So, gather up your friends and come down and celebrate. Have some food, enjoy the music, have a
drink, and celebrate fall! Prost!!
